"The first edition of Structure and Mechanism in Organic Chemistry was written in 1950-51 when the formation of the subject had been accomplished and the work of consolidation and development by a vastly increased number of workers was only just beginning. This work has so flourished since then as to constitute a large part of the story now to be told. In this edition about two-thirds of the text of the previous one has been retained with only minor emendations and more than that amount of new writing has been added."
